Argentina National Teams

Logo UAR.svg

The Argentina national rugby team, nicknamed Los Pumas, represents Argentina in international rugby union matches. The team, which plays in sky blue and white jerseys, is organised by the Argentine Rugby Union (UAR, from the Spanish: Unión Argentina de Rugby).

Argentina played its first international rugby match in 1910 against a touring British Isles team. It is today considered one of the top rugby nations in the world and the best in the Americas by a considerable degree, and has competed at every Rugby World Cup staged since the first in 1987.

Although rugby union is nowhere near as popular as football in Argentina, the impressive results by Los Pumas since the 1999 World Cup, have nonetheless seen the sport's popularity grow exponentially. Argentina has managed from its appearance in the international arena to accomplish several upset victories, are tough contenders when playing in Buenos Aires, and are fully capable of regularly defeating Six Nations sides. An upset victory over the hosts France in the first game of the 2007 World Cup, took Argentina to fourth in the IRB World Rankings. The team were undefeated in their pool, and reached the semi-finals for the first time, beating Scotland 19-13 in their quarter-final. Despite being beaten 37-13 by South Africa in the semi-finals, they defeated France for a second time in the tournament to claim third place overall. In March 2008 the team reached an all-time high of third in the IRB World Rankings. As of 23 March 2009 Argentina is ranked fifth in the world behind Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and Ireland. This makes Argentina ranked just below the countries which compose the Tri-Nations and the current Six Nations champion.

Through solid advances in competitiveness and performance during the 2000s, Argentina will begin playing in a new expanded Tri-Nations (Four Nations) tournament starting in 2012. Argentina is expected to be an underdog performer in the tournament for the first year or two, but will quickly improve over time with regular experience playing the worlds most elite teams. The national teams personal goals for the early 2010s is to achieve their first victories over the All Blacks and Springboks.

After Marcelo Loffreda left following the 2007 Rugby World Cup to take up the head coaching job at Guinness Premiership club Leicester Tigers, the UAR spent nearly five months searching for a successor until opting for a two-coach setup, with former Pumas Santiago Phelan and Fabián Turnes taking over.

France National Teams

France Rugby Logo.svg

The France national rugby union team represents France in rugby union. They compete annually against England, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales in the Six Nations Championship. They have won the championship outright sixteen times, shared it a further eight times, and have completed nine grand slams.

France is one of the strongest rugby nations in Europe and are currently the highest ranked Northern Hemisphere team, being third in the world as of 21 June 2010.[1] Six former French players have been inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame, with one of them, Philippe Sella, also having been inducted into the IRB Hall of Fame. France also has the best winning record of any northern hemisphere team when playing a test against a Tri-Nations opponent. As of 2010, the national side has been victorious over New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa more than ten times each.

Rugby was introduced to France in 1872 by the British, and on New Year's Day 1906 the national side played its first Test match — against New Zealand in Paris. France played sporadically against the Home Nations until they joined them to form a Five Nations tournament (now the Six Nations Championship) in 1910. France also competed in the rugby competitions at early Summer Olympics, winning the gold medal in 1900 and two silver medals in the 1920s. France came of age during the 1950s and 1960s, and won their first Five Nations title outright in 1959. They won their first Grand Slam in 1968. Since the inaugural World Cup in 1987, France have qualified for the knock-out stage of every tournament. They have reached the final twice, losing to the All Blacks in 1987 and to Australia in 1999. France hosted the 2007 Rugby World Cup, where, as in 2003, they were beaten in the semi finals by England.

France traditionally play in blue shirts with white shorts and red socks, and are commonly referred to as les tricolores or les bleus. The French emblem is a golden rooster imposed upon a red shield. Their alternative strip is composed of a white shirt and navy blue shorts and socks. French international matches are played at several venues across the country; the Stade de France in the Paris suburb of Saint-Denis is used for their games during the Six Nations, and they have a formidable home record at the Stade Vélodrome in Marseille where they have only lost twice, to Argentina in 2004 and to New Zealand in 2009.

South Africa National Teams

Bok Logo.svg

The South African national rugby union team (the Springboks) are the current holders of the Rugby World Cup and the Tri-Nations Championship. They are ranked number two in the IRB World Rankings as of 20 January 2010. They were named 2008 Team of the Year at the prestigious Laureus World Sports Awards. As of 23 October 2009, the Springboks were holders of every major trophy available to them: the World Cup, the Tri-Nations, Nelson Mandela Plate, Freedom Cup and British and Irish Lions Series Winners.

Although South Africa was instrumental in the creation of the Rugby World Cup competition, the Springboks did not compete in the first two World Cups in 1987 and 1991 because of anti-apartheid sporting boycotts of South Africa. The team made its World Cup debut in 1995, when the newly democratic South Africa hosted the tournament. The Springboks then defeated the All Blacks 15-12 in the final, which is now remembered as one of the greatest moments in South Africa's sporting history, and a watershed moment in the post-Apartheid nation-building process. South Africa regained their title as champions 12 years later, when they defeated England 15–6 in the 2007 final. As a result of the 2007 World Cup tournament, the Springboks were promoted to first place in the IRB World Rankings.

The Springboks play in green and gold jerseys, and their emblems are the Springbok and the Protea. The side have been playing international rugby since 1891, when a British Isles side toured the nation, playing South Africa in their first Test on 30 July. South Africa is currently coached by Peter de Villiers, after Jake White, who led the Boks to the 2007 World Cup title, announced his resignation effective at the end of 2007. The current captain is John Smit, who was returned to his traditional position of hooker effective with the Boks' last 2009 Test against Ireland after having been moved to tighthead prop for the 2008 end of year tests, and spending the next 12 months in that position.

Italy National Teams

Italy rugby.png

The Italy national rugby union team represent the nation of Italy in the sport of rugby union. The team is also known as the Azzurri (the Blues). Italy have been playing international rugby since the late 1920s, and today are considered to be in the top tier of European rugby and compete annually in the Six Nations Championship with England, France, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

Arguably, Italian Rugby really came to prominence in 2000 when it was added to the Five Nations, creating the Six Nations. Originally on the end of some heavy defeats, the side has grown in competitiveness, recorded a fourth place finish in 2007, and even in defeat, lop-sided losses are becoming far less frequent. Italy are ranked eleventh in the world by the IRB as of 21 June 2010.

Italy have also competed at every Rugby World Cup since the first tournament in 1987, but have yet to progress beyond the first round. Their best showing thus far has been in 2003 and 2007 where they managed two wins during the pool stages.

The current head coach is Nick Mallett. Number eight Sergio Parisse is their current captain.

Australia National Teams

Shirt badge/Association crest

The Australia national rugby league team have represented Australia in rugby league football since the establishment of that sport in Australia in 1908. They are the most successful team in Rugby League World Cup history, winning 9 out of 13 tournaments contested, and failing to reach the final only once, in the first tournament in 1954. Since 7 July 1994 the team's official nickname has been the Kangaroos, though they had been referred to unofficially as that for a long time. The team is administered by the Australian Rugby League.

Previously, the Australian team was only referred to as the Kangaroos when on tours of Great Britain or France. In 1997 Australia was also represented by a Super League Australia team, drawing on players from that year's Super League competition.

The Kangaroo's ranking in the RLIF World Rankings is world number 1, even though they were runners up in the 2008 Rugby League World Cup. Australia has won all but one of their games in the RLIF Rankings period, and thus is still ranked first.

Ireland National Teams

Ireland rugby.png

The Ireland Rugby Union Team represents the island of Ireland (both Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland) in rugby union. The team competes annually in the Six Nations Championship (which they have won eleven times outright and shared eight times) and every four years in the Rugby World Cup, where they have been eliminated at the quarter-final stage in all but two competitions (1999 and 2007). Ireland is also one of the four unions which make up the British and Irish Lions - players eligible to play for Ireland are also eligible for the Lions. Eight former Ireland players have earned induction into the International Rugby Hall of Fame, with four of them also having earned induction into the IRB Hall of Fame.

Outside centre Brian O'Driscoll, the current captain and Ireland's current all-time leading try scorer, is considered one of the best rugby players in the world and led Ireland to only their second Grand Slam in March 2009. He was also captain of the Lions on their 2005 tour of New Zealand, although his on-field captaincy was cut short by a controversial injury in the Lions' first Test. O'Driscoll was succeeded as Lions captain for their 2009 tour of South Africa by his current teammate, lock Paul O'Connell. Keith Wood, O'Driscoll's predecessor as Ireland captain before retiring in 2003, was the inaugural IRB International Player of the Year in 2001.

Ireland's highest ever position in the IRB World Rankings is third which they reached in 2003 and 2006. They currently lie in fifth position as of 18 February 2010 after their defeat by France in the Six Nations

We know that All Blacks & Red Dragons are one of the most powerful rugby team in the world. In 26th June they will be meet face to face again. The aura that All Blacks had seems to be waning away and Wales are going stronger and definitely New Zealand looks weaker before the match. All Blacks as they will always be didn’t utter anything, but will be hopeful of showing their action on the field. Where ever they go it’s like dumb the opposition and take away the game in their name but it could not be same this time maybe. Looking back; however, there is an interesting statistic way back early in the 20th century the All Blacks when toured North America and Europe they have won as many as 34 matches out of 35 played and they lost to Wales. Even the Red Dragons (Wales) would win 13-12 and their respective legacies seem to continue. This winter will see the All Blacks play a test match on the hallowed turf of Carisbrook for the last time. As New Zealand builds up to the biggest rugby party of them all, World Cup 2011, Dunedin is going all out with a brand new roofed stadium. Although an exciting future lies ahead with the new venue, on June 26 we will celebrate the culture and history of Carisbrook, one of the great rugby grounds of the world.

It maybe like few decades back that the Red Dragons believe it to be easy game against New Zealand. However, with history in the thinking a win for Wales could be difficult at the Millennium Stadium this weekend when they meet New Zealand.

Wales National Teams

The Wales national rugby union team represent Wales in international rugby union tournaments. They compete annually in the Six Nations Championship with England, France, Ireland, Italy and Scotland. Wales have won the Six Nations and its predecessors 24 times outright, second only to England with 25 wins. Wales most recent championship win came in 2008. They also compete in the Rugby World Cup every four years. The International Rugby Board (IRB) regards Wales as a Tier One rugby nation, and ranks them eighth in the world as of 1 February 2010.

The governing body, the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU), was established in 1881, the same year that Wales played their first international against England. Wales' performances in the Home Nations Championship (now the Six Nations) continued to improve, experiencing their first 'golden age' between 1900 and 1911. They first played New Zealand, known as the All Blacks, in 1905, when they defeated them 3–0 in a famous match at Cardiff Arms Park. Welsh rugby struggled between the first and second World Wars, but experienced a second 'golden age' between 1969 and 1980 when they won eight Five Nations Championships (including 3 shared wins). They played in the inaugural Rugby World Cup in 1987 where they achieved their best ever result of third. Following the professionalisation of rugby in 1995, Wales hosted the 1999 World Cup and, in 2005, won their first Six Nations Grand Slam which was followed by a second in 2008. Their 2005 Grand Slam is notable for being the first ever team to gain the accolade playing most matches away from home. Only Ireland repeated this in 2009.

Wales play in red jerseys embroidered with the Prince of Wales's feathers. Their current home ground is the Millennium Stadium, completed in 1999 to replace the National Stadium at Cardiff Arms Park. Ten former Welsh players have been inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame, and two of the ten have been inducted into the IRB Hall of Fame.

New Zealand National Teams

The All Blacks represent New Zealand in rugby union, which is regarded as the country's national sport. The All Blacks are the only international rugby team with the highest successful winning record against every other test nation they have played; winning close to 75% of all their matches and ranking as the number one team in the world for the most period of time in IRB World Rankings.[2] More than half of the top 20 rugby union test playing nations have never beaten New Zealand in over 100 years of competition.

The All Blacks compete annually with Australia (the Wallabies) and South Africa (the Springboks) in the Tri-Nations Series, and have been Tri-Nations champions nine times in the tournament's 14-year history. New Zealand also holds the Bledisloe Cup, which they currently contest annually with Australia and have three times completed a Grand Slam (in 1978, 2005 and 2008), beating all four Home Nations during one tour.

The All Blacks currently remain the number one ranked team in the IRB World Rankings[2] and were named the International Rugby Board (IRB) Team of the Year in 2005, 2006 and 2008.[3] Fourteen former All Blacks have been inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame, one into the IRB Hall of Fame.

The team first competed in 1884 against Cumberland County, New South Wales, and played their first Test match in 1903, a victory against Australia. This was followed by a tour of the northern hemisphere in 1905.

The team's early uniforms consisted of a black jersey with a silver fern and white knickerbockers. By their 1905 tour New Zealand were wearing all black, except for the silver fern, and their All Black name dates from this time. New Zealand traditionally perform a haka (Māori challenge) before each match. Traditionally, the haka performed is Te Rauparaha's Ka Mate, though since 2005, Kapa o Pango, a modified version of the 1924 All Blacks haka, Kia Whaka-ngawari, has occasionally been performed.

English Rugby has had yet another re-birth since that night and arrived in the delivery room last week with more of a pop than a bang, but with early signs that this time things really are changing for the better. Australia seemed to struggle in Italy, but with a raft of changes for this week’s game, we probably shouldn’t read too much into that. While England are having their first run together the Wallabies have been playing matches and come here with match experience behind them, but even so they have never feared to well against England away from Australia and I think they will find an English side here today that are far from lifeless and could find themselves in a real dog fight, I think that either side will have a different approach to this match and I fancy England's chances a bit more than I do the Wallabies, Australia have won 5 of the last 7 against England and have won 2 of their last 3 at Twickers, but England have won 4 of the last 6 in matches at this venue, I reckon that England will go well today and with Wilkinson in their side they could even spring the upset.Good Luck.

Live Rugby

Much of the press attention has so far been focussed on the front row confrontation, perhaps understandably as this was probably the battle which was most responsible for England’s RWC quarter final victory, with Sheridan seeing off both Al Baxter and Matt Dunning. No doubt England will be hoping for more of the same this week, but I hope they are not banking on being so dominant this time. Sheridan has been some way short of that kind of form all season, and under Michael Foley, the Wallabies pack has improved significantly. Let’s hope that Graham Rowntree’s public questioning of Sheridan’s low intimidation levels, can provide the motivation to see him destroy the Aussie pair all over again. One of the more pleasing aspects of the PI game was England’s total dominance of the line-out, they will do very well to repeat the feat against Australia, who have recalled Nathan Sharpe, still, in my opinion, one the best line-out men around.

Venue : Wales vs New Zealand – at jun 19

Carisbrook is a major sporting venue in Dunedin, New Zealand. The city’s main domestic and international rugby union venue, it has also been used for other sports such as cricket, soccer, rugby league and motocross. Carisbrook has also hosted a Joe Cocker concert and frequently hosted pre-game concerts before rugby matches in the 1990s. In 2011 Carisbrook will be closed, being replaced by Forsyth Barr Stadium at University Plaza in North Dunedin.

By the beginning of the 21st century, the ground in general and the terraces in particular were under threat. The demands of modern international sport have meant that the ground needs to be significantly upgraded or replaced to continue as an international venue.

International games were expected to cease at Carisbrook, and the All Blacks lost what was initially thought to be the last ever test at Carisbrook against South Africa on 12 July 2008. As it turned out, the All Blacks returned to Carisbrook to face France on 13 June 2009, which they lost 27-22.The All Blacks will play their last test at Carisbrook in 2010 against Wales. This will mean that the All Blacks have played every major test playing nation at Carisbrook.

The NZRFU has announced that three Rugby World Cup games are scheduled to be played at Carisbrook in 2011, but will be moved to Forsyth Barr Stadium if it is completed in time.
